Listen up, Team. Coach Willy Martinez here.
We always talk about the physical tools you need to succeed—the sharp jab, the explosive hook, the quick head movement. But if you’ve been paying attention, you know that’s only half the fight. This week, we aren’t talking about punches; we are talking about what’s happening in your eyes when those punches are flying. We are talking about possessing yourself.
The Strategy: To get this right, we are looking at Sun Tzu, the greatest tactical mind from ancient China. In The Art of War, he wrote a line that separates the amateurs from the masters:
“In the midst of chaos, there is also opportunity.”
What does that mean for a boxer? It means when things look the most out of control, that is when you must be the most in control.
The Tactics: We have all been there. You’re sparring, your opponent has you cornered, and you’re just taking heat. Your heart rate is spiked, your lungs are empty, and you can’t think. That is chaos.
Amateurs let that chaos in. They stop thinking. They throw punches from their waist, they close their eyes, they freeze up. They have surrendered their self-possession.
Masters know that is the exact moment their opponent is making a mistake. They keep their eyes open. They trust their block. They keep their self-possession. And they see the opening for the counter. The opportunity.
This week’s focus is simple. Don’t panic. Don’t rush. Don’t chase the chaos. Control the only thing you can: yourself.

The Commitment: We are going to make this a central part of our training this week. You want growth? Pay attention during sparring. When you feel the chaos coming, take a half-step back, breathe, and find the opportunity. It’s there, waiting for the master to seize it.
Stay disciplined. Stay composed. Possess your mind.
