In this gym, we spend a lot of time looking outward. When you’re preparing for a bout, you study the opponent. You look at their reach, you analyze their footwork, you try to find the tell when they’re about to throw that rear hook. That analysis is necessary.
But if that is all you do, you are missing the real fight.
The toughest person you will ever step into the ring with isn’t the guy across from you. It’s the one looking back at you in the mirror.
At Pharaoh Boxing, we draw inspiration from warrior cultures across history because the principles of combat don’t change. The legendary samurai and philosopher Miyamoto Musashi gave us the blueprint for real, sustainable growth when he wrote:
“Determine that today you will overcome your self of the day before.”
This is what I call the “Infinite Victory.”
In boxing, it’s easy to fixate on a finish line—getting that Golden Gloves trophy, turning pro, or just surviving a hard sparring session. But the true warrior knows there is no end. Growth is a relentless, daily accumulation of practice.
Defeating “Yesterday’s Understanding”
So, how do we apply samurai philosophy to hitting the heavy bag?
Simple: Stop trying to be a world champion tomorrow. Instead, focus entirely on beating the version of you that walked into the gym yesterday.
Did you keep your hands up for ten seconds longer during the burnout drill today? Did you maintain your breathing rhythm better than you did on Monday? If yes, you have followed the Way. You have “polished the spirit.”

The Unmoving Mind
To achieve this, you need what the samurai called an “Unmoving Mind.”
Chaos is guaranteed in the ring. You’re going to get hit. You’re going to get tired. If you meet that chaos with frustration, fear, or doubt, your opponent already owns you. True mental strength is being “possessed by nothing”—you aren’t distracted by the mistake you made ten seconds ago, and you aren’t worried about the knockout that might happen ten seconds from now. You are completely present.
Another great strategist, Sun Tzu, famously said that “victorious warriors win first and then go to war.” Your discipline, your mindset, and your preparation before the bell rings are what actually secure the victory. The fight itself is just the execution of the work you’ve already done.
The Challenge
The next time you wrap your hands, forget about the “big picture.” Your spirit is your true shield. Challenge yourself to find pure focus right here, right now.
Don’t worry about being better than the other guy. Just be better than your yesterday self. That’s the Pharaoh standard.
