“Joe developed a great liking for me and to show his goodwill, volunteered to teach me all the fine points of which he was the master. I learned more in those two weeks than ever before” – Jack Johnson.
In this picture, we can see Joe Choynski and Jack Johnson sharing a jail cell together.
In 1901, a young and inexperienced fighter named Johnson faced the highly skilled and experienced Joe Choynski. Unfortunately, Choynski knocked out Johnson in the third round.
In an era where boxing was outlawed in numerous states, the duo found themselves incarcerated together, transforming their prison into a stage for public boxing exhibitions. It was during this extraordinary period that Choynski imparted to Johnson the intricate secrets of the sport – the precise technique, and the masterful art of evasion. These invaluable lessons would later serve as a foundation for Johnson’s illustrious career as a heavyweight champion.
The wisdom gained within those confining walls would prove priceless to him, ultimately shaping him into ‘The Galveston Giant’, and paving his path to become boxing’s first black heavyweight champion of the world! What an awe-inspiring journey!

While we are actively helping our kids build confidence, develop strength, and have stability during transitions, our club area is small, and we are lacking gear. We need your help to make our efforts go even further! You can help us purchase more protective gear and equipment, and eventually find a bigger area to train these kids. We have recruited the help of assistant coaches that are also volunteering their time. Together, we want to be able to help even more children in Southern Illinois.
We are a non-profit club, registered with the state of Illinois.
